Match Week 34 Preview

Luton Town vs. Brentford

Kenilworth Road, Saturday, 3pm Local, 10am Eastern

The Hatters have a chance to kick off the weekend with a bang and put real pressure on their relegation rivals. Rob Edwards’ side plays host to Brentford who are more than likely safe despite patchy form this season. All matches are crucial for Luton, but this one could be pivotal because Nottingham Forest and Everton square off on Sunday. This guarantees dropped points from one or both, so the team needs to ride the energy of Kenilworth Road and maximize their return. Edwards will be without a host of first team regulars, however, so this could be an uphill climb.

The Bees are unbeaten in 4 and sit 5 points above Everton. Their improved form and returning players should make them a tough proposition for Luton, even if they’ve struggled for consistency. The full battery of Ivan Toney, Yoane Wissa, and Bryan Mbeumo has lifted their offense, and even Kevin Schade is back in the mix. A win at the weekend would solidify their survival push further, and it’s easy to imagine Thomas Frank lighting a fire under his squad to do just that.

Sheffield United vs. Burnley

Bramall Lane, Saturday, 3pm Local, 10am Eastern

Earlier in the season, this would have looked like a true relegation 6 pointer. However, in late April both these sides look destined for the drop, even if they’re mathematically still in it. The Blades nabbed a draw away to Chelsea but couldn’t build on that momentum against a much more manageable Brentford side, and the season has looked lost for months. That said, a strong ending to the campaign could be exactly what the players and the manager needs to steel themselves for a promotion push next year. Burnley are beatable for Chris Wilder’s men – but it’s certain to be a tight match.

Vincent Kompany has his side battling late in the season, but it’s likely too little too late. Two hard fought draws have sandwiched a damaging defeat at Everton, and the Clarets are left 6 points (and a hefty goal difference) away from safety. A win here and some fortunate results elsewhere could kindle Lancashire hopes, but this match is more than likely a preview for the top of next years’ Championship.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Arsenal

Molineux, Saturday, 7:30pm Local, 2:30pm Eastern

Wolves are comfortably in 11th, safe, and incredibly banged up. This match isn’t key to their season but could still have massive ripple effects in the title race even though many have already crowned Manchester City champions. Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan are both likely to feature, which makes Gary O’Neill’s offense look much stronger, even if Pablo Sarabia has exceeded expectations. If Wolves are to earn something from this showdown, they’ll likely need to cede possession, absorbing pressure, and coiling for counter attacks – it could be a long night for José Sá, who’s been excellent this season.

It's been a tough week for many English teams, and Arsenal have been near the top of that list, with successive losses knocking them off the top of the table and out of the Champions League. Mikel Arteta needs his squad to shake off the last few results and attack their last few matches with renewed vigor. This match is certainly winnable, but his core players need to rediscover the attacking fluency which saw them scoring for fun a few weeks ago. City don’t play this weekend, so it’s very possible that the Gunners can heap some pressure on Pep’s side and lead the league on Saturday evening.
